Caboolture Region Environmental Education Centre (CREEC) All-abilities playground

The Caboolture Region Environmental Education Centre (CREEC) is home to the Moreton Bay Region’s first all-abilities playground, complete with an accessible flying fox, carousel, and pirate ship.

Begin by entering the carpark off Rowley Road. This is clearly signed and offers plenty of space for cars and vans with wheelchair ramps to manoeuvre. Follow the pathway to the CREEC main building – you can’t miss it, painted in amazing Australian animal murals.

Keep an eye out for the green tree frog statue next to the information board on your way in. This is the start of an exciting visual journey, where you can explore and discover at your own pace.

Here, you can speak with the friendly staff, utilise one of the ‘quiet spaces’ inside, refill water bottles, and enjoy a packed morning tea or lunch at the shaded picnic tables. There is plenty of seating, perfect for groups to meet and relax. Accessible toilet facilities with Braille signage are located around the back of the building, and are easily accessed via a sealed pathway.

In addition to its various walking tracks, picnic spots, sensory garden, and community nursery, the real highlight of CREEC is the new all-abilities playground.

The concrete pathway to the left of the main information centre passes a smaller, fenced chip bark playground. The path then leads to a lockable gate, which marks the entrance to the all-abilities area.

Within this playground you will find plenty to see, touch, smell and do. There is a carousel, flying foxes with large platforms, adaptive swings, and wheelchair ramp leading to a ‘pirate ship’ with moveable knobs and cogs.

Dotted around the spacious area (made of softfall rubber matting, concrete paths, and chip bark gardens) are low benches, sandstone block seating, animal statues, musical play equipment, and sensory boards. Equipment can be reached from a seated position and encourage inclusive play.

The fully-fenced playground backs on to bushland on one side, and offers plenty of shade under the large sail cloths. Make sure you pack your hat and sunscreen, as some of the paths are in the sun.

Drawing inspiration from its natural surrounds, the open layout really creates a sense of space and allows freedom of movement. This is ideal for those who prefer to choose their own activities, or who feel more comfortable with the familiar.

While colourful and with lots on offer for the adventurous and curious, there is also the ability to take ‘quieter’ trails – browse the scented gardens, enjoy the peaceful bushland views, and touch the animal statues.

There’s something for everyone on this educational, social, and fun day out.

Sensory Considerations

Tactile:

  • Concrete animal statues (frog, koala, platypus)
  • Low garden beds with scented herbs and flowers
  • Moveable equipment (sensory boards, musical instruments, smooth and rough surfaces)

Visual:

  • Visual story – There is a strong sense of a ‘visual story’ at CREEC. The large welcome sign located near the carpark features images of birds and other wildlife. Visitors can see the types of animals they might find on the nature reserve. This may be useful for people who like to pre-plan and know what to expect. Further information, maps and pamphlets are available in the environmental centre
  • Painted artwork on concrete paths (hopscotch, numbers, animal footprints). This helps with the feeling of journey and movement as you navigate the pathways to the various play areas
  • Colourful play equipment
  • Gardens, plants, windmill, bushland and animals.

Auditory:

  • CREEC and the all-abilities playground are located on a nature reserve. This offers a peaceful environment to explore and play. Some noises may include water birds and other wildlife from the bush surrounds.
  • Those who are more sensitive to sound can select quieter paths away from the main playground and crowds. The centre also has a dedicated area for indoor activities and a safe place to retreat.

NOTE: CREEC is open for meeting and event space hire. Please contact CREEC for availability and booking information. Service and support dogs are welcomed at CREEC, but other pets are not allowed due to the nature reserve location.
